THE house….

My stepson Hugo is here. He is wonderful. But he wears his boxer shorts underneath his swimming trunks. What’s that all about?

Right, down to business…we saw the house. It is heavenly, totally heavenly. It was built in 1750 and looks like it will last another few hundred years. It is all marble, stone and wood. Solid, safe and glorious. It reminds me a little of an English farmhouse.

We played tennis on the tennis court. I played well and Leo lost a tooth. A sure sign that we must buy it. Having said that we can’t afford the asking price, but are keen to offer less. In part because we have just been told by the lady in the boulangerie in the nearest town (and they know everything) that we it is only worth a third of the asking price. But when you’re in love it’s hard to be practical….

  1. WOW … it sounds glorious and my personal belief is that if you spend too much time in life being practical, you’ll never actually ‘do’ anything. Go with your heart … it can never be wrong in the long-term.

PS. I’m sure I should write some sort of ‘but don’t forget your head too’ comment, but I too am such a sucker for being in love!

  2. Helena, how exciting! I love looking at and hearing about houses. I find myself looking in estate agent’s windows wherever I go, whether it’s a day trip to the Cotswolds or a city break – on a recent trip to Berlin I was dreaming within hours of arriving about what it would be like to live in a 100 yr-old apartment in Kreuzberg.
So, the big question is, will you be making an offer on THE house before you head back to Abu Dhabi? And if so, what will do you with Sainte Cecile, if that’s not too intrusive a question? I loved reading your blog about the time you spent living there but it sounds like you’re ready for pastures new and no doubt the Savoie will be just as rich in experience.
    Bonne courage!
    Catherine

  3. Bury that tooth in the grounds of the house, and offer less than a third of the asking price. I know it will work out.

  4. OOh, sounds very exciting!
When can you post photos of the inside?
I too love hearing about houses, love all those programmes about homes in the sun, cash in the attic etc.
It is hard to be practical when you’re in love, and maybe the locals undervalue the area?
Can’t wait to get more details! Gosh, I hope that last bit is not being too intrusive.

  5. Hello all – tooth buried and email sent to owner raising delicate question of high asking price. To answer questions; sorry no pics from inside and we would have to sell Sainte Cecile in order to buy this one. Have just been up again playing tennis and it is too dreamy Hx
