The Master

8th January 2007

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to listen to more music. When I say music, I don’t mean Take That’s latest album (although I do have it and jolly good it is too) but classical music. I have this romantic idea of the children growing up with classi …

Big Brother

6th January 2007

I switched on my computer this morning to check out the news. What is one of the lead stories on the BBC website? The improbably named singer Donny Tourette has escaped from the Big Brother house by jumping over a fence. This is news? Hellloooo? Who ca …

Publish and be damned

4th January 2007

When I was in Italy researching my book Ciao Bella I met the author Tim Parks. At the time I was still planning to write my book about Italian women but I told Tim the story of my Italian family. “Now that’s a story I want to read,” he said. I asked hi …

Big in China

3rd January 2007

Of all places Two Lipsticks and a Lover is about to be published in China. This is very good news. China has a population of 1.3 billion. Of those 49.2% are women. So if only 0.1% of them buy it, I’m quids in. It’s an exciting thought, being published …

Alone at last…..

2nd January 2007

So they’ve all gone. But not before my aunt managed to fall out with me as well, just minutes before she left. She was lecturing me about something and I didn’t show enough interest so she got very grumpy. Stupid really, I only had another half an hour …

Resolutions to be broken

31st December 2006

Every New Year’s Eve I make the same resolutions; do 100 sit-ups a day (at least), drink less, don’t shout at my children, read more and improve my French. This year I am wondering if I should bother with any resolutions at all as I never end up keepin …

To be or not to be a grandparent

30th December 2006

So far the paternal visit is going well. The only person he’s managed to fall out with is his sister, my aunt, by teasing her relentlessly about her capacity to exaggerate the merits or otherwise of a particular kind of rice/pasta/vegetable. She took h …

Learning with Dante

27th December 2006

When I was a teenager I was re-introduced to my father. He is Italian and much to his horror I didn’t speak the language of Dante. Not surprising really as he and my mother split up when I was three and since then I had lived in Stockhom and Berkshire. …

Happy Christmas and peace on earth or at least at home

24th December 2006

Yesterday was the first day of the school holidays and the children were all up at 6.15am. By mid-morning I was running out of ways to entertain them and so did what millions of parents will be doing this Christmas and put them in front of the TV. But …

This woman is not a terrorist

22nd December 2006

As fog causes chaos at Britain’s airports I sit here wondering if I will ever fly again. It’s become such a nightmare that whenever I go back to England I take the train. If I can’t take the train I don’t go. You are treated like a criminal from the mo …
